“EMDR Saved My Life”: Miley Cyrus on Healing Her Stage Fright
When Miley Cyrus recently shared that EMDR therapy changed her life, I wasn’t surprised. Not because I know her personally (I wish!), but because I’ve seen that same transformation in my own clients again and again.
In a raw interview, Miley opened up about her experience with EMDR, saying:
“It saved my life.”
She described being guided into a calm, hypnotic state where she could access memories and emotions she hadn’t realized were still living inside her.
“Watch your life like a movie and watch it pass you by through the windows… and I see all these times, you know, just like frames of these moments like a film.”
This is exactly how EMDR works.
It allows the brain to safely revisit memories—sometimes big traumas, sometimes subtle but painful moments—and reprocess them, so they no longer feel frozen in time.
During her session, Miley shared that her therapist asked:
“What’s the feeling of anxiety that comes up for you?”
And in that vulnerable, hypnotic space, something rose to the surface:
“I just want them to love me so bad.”
That sentence—simple and aching—is the kind of emotional truth that EMDR helps people uncover. Through guided processing, Miley was able to gently move through memories and moments that shaped this deep-seated belief, noticing how those experiences influenced her anxiety and self-worth. By reprocessing these past events in a safe space, she was able to release the grip of that anxiety and step into a place of peace.
Miley said that after the session:
“I never had stage fright again. Ever.”
So what is EMDR, really?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a trauma therapy that uses bilateral stimulation—eye movements, tapping, or sound—to help the brain process stuck memories and regulate the nervous system. It can feel surreal or deeply emotional, but it’s also backed by decades of research.
Originally developed to treat PTSD, EMDR is now used for so much more: anxiety, phobias, panic attacks, low self-worth, grief, and even the lingering effects of emotionally unavailable caregivers. It helps you connect the dots between past experiences and present-day reactions—and create new, healthier patterns.
If you’ve ever thought:
Why am I still reacting this way?
I know better, but I can’t stop feeling this way,
EMDR might be for you.
You don’t have to be a pop star to deserve deep healing.
At New Light Counseling in Altamonte Springs, EMDR is one of the ways we help people move from survival mode into something freer, fuller, and more alive.
Like Miley said:
“I saw myself sit down on the train and look out the windows.”
Sometimes healing is simply learning how to stay in the seat, witness the past without getting stuck in it—and let the train move forward.
