What is EMDR therapy?

No one-size-fits-all script.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy that helps you process and heal from trauma, distressing memories, and painful experiences — without having to relive them in detail.

Originally developed for PTSD, EMDR is now used to treat a wide range of issues including anxiety, depression, relationship trauma, attachment wounds, phobias, and more. Instead of just talking through your pain, EMDR helps your brain and body reprocess traumatic memories so they no longer feel overwhelming.

How EMDR works

Trauma often gets "stuck" in the nervous system, causing triggers, emotional flooding, or shutdown. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or sound) to help your brain:

  • Process memories in a new, healthier way

  • Reduce the emotional charge of past experiences

  • Reconnect with a sense of safety and empowerment

  • Access deeper insight and meaning

At New Light Counseling, EMDR sessions are always gentle, collaborative, and paced to your needs. You are never forced to go faster than you're ready for.

What can EMDR help with?

You don't need a "big T" trauma to benefit.

Many clients find healing from a wide range of experiences. If you've tried talk therapy before but still feel stuck, EMDR might be the missing piece.

  • PTSD and complex trauma

  • Childhood emotional neglect

  • Relationship wounds and breakups

  • Anxiety and panic attacks

  • Sexual assault or abuse

  • Grief and loss

  • Low self-worth or chronic shame

  • Emotionally immature or abusive parents
