Common Questions About Therapy at New Light Counseling
What can I expect at my first session?
Our first session is our chance to meet face to face, whether that’s in-person or virtually through video sessions. In the first session, we’ll go over your personal history, the concerns that bring you in and what you hope you get out of counseling and the therapeutic process. If you have specific goals we can discuss those and if you’re not really sure, together we can collaborate on what your goals will be. In this session we’ll get to know one another and make sure we’re a good fit to work through your goals together, if for some reason we find we are not a good fit then I will provide referrals for someone who may be a better fit for you.
At the office, there is a lobby area to take a seat when you first come in. You can expect that your therapist will be ready within 5 minutes of your appointment time unless something urgent has come up. Please wait patiently for your therapist to come out to the lobby and greet you.
If we’re meeting virtually, you can expect a link in your reminder text. If you do not receive a link within 5 minutes please call or text me so I can resend you the link.
How long are sessions?
The therapy hour is 50 minutes long, so around the 50 minute mark we will be wrapping up our session. I will take responsibility of keeping track of time and making sure we’re staying on track, but there are clocks in my office if you’d like to keep track of time as well.
How often do I need therapy? How long will I be in therapy?
How long you’ll be in therapy and how often you come in is something that’s unique to everyone. Typically therapy is most powerful and beneficial when sessions are conducted on a weekly basis. Depending on your goals, we can discuss what your realistic expectations can be.
Do you take insurance?
Yes, we are in network with Aetna and Cigna. We can also offer support in submitting out of network claims, please e-mail us or submit an inquiry and mention out of network billing so we can check your benefits!
Do you offer a sliding scale?
I believe counseling should be affordable for all. We offer a small number of spots that are available for sliding scale clients. When making your appointment, you may request a sliding scale option. If there are no current spots available you will be offered a spot on the waitlist or a referral to another counselor who may have sliding scale options.
What are your fees?
Our session fees range from $60 to $150, depending on the therapist and the type of service.
We offer different options to make therapy accessible:
Sessions with our Registered Interns typically range from $60 to $105.
Sessions with our licensed therapist, Ashley, range from $120 to $150.
We also offer a sliding scale for those paying out-of-pocket and can help you check your out-of-network benefits if we’re not in-network with your insurance. If you have Aetna or Cigna, we are in-network and can bill directly for you.
We’re happy to discuss what works best for your needs and budget—just reach out!
What is the difference between a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern and a Licensed Therapist?
A Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern (RMHCI) is a highly trained therapist who has completed a master’s degree in counseling or a related field and is working under supervision to complete the final requirements for full licensure. RMHCIs are qualified to provide therapy, diagnose mental health conditions, and use evidence-based treatment approaches—just like licensed therapists.
The key difference is simply that RMHCIs are in the final stages of their clinical journey. In fact, many RMHCIs bring fresh, up-to-date training, a strong passion for the field, and close collaboration with licensed supervisors who oversee their work to ensure the highest quality of care. This means you benefit from not just one, but two mental health professionals reviewing your care.
Clients often find that RMHCIs offer the same level of support, insight, and effectiveness as licensed therapists—and sometimes more flexible scheduling and reduced rates. It’s a smart, compassionate option for quality care that doesn’t compromise on experience or dedication.
